A mobility scooter provides far more than a convenient way to travel. For many people, it is an important part of maintaining their freedom, confidence and independence.
At First Senior, we have worked exclusively within the mobility industry for more than 30 years. We understand how much customers rely on their mobility scooters and the disruption that accidental damage, theft or another unexpected incident can cause.
Specialist mobility scooter insurance can help protect both your scooter and you against a range of risks. In this guide, we explain what First Senior mobility scooter insurance can cover, whether insurance is legally required and what you should consider when choosing your protection.
What is mobility scooter insurance?
Mobility scooter insurance is specialist cover designed around the risks associated with owning and using a mobility scooter.
Depending on the policy selected, it can provide protection against:
- public liability claims
- accidental damage
- theft and attempted theft
- fire, flood and storm damage
- puncture cover
Unlike general household insurance, specialist mobility scooter insurance is designed with mobility equipment and its users in mind.
First Senior’s mobility insurance is available for a wide range of new and used mobility scooters, powerchairs and other mobility equipment, subject to the relevant policy terms and conditions.
Is mobility scooter insurance a legal requirement in the UK?
Insurance is not a legal requirement for Class 2 or Class 3 mobility scooters and powered wheelchairs. However, it is highly recommended, and official Department for Transport guidance recommends arranging insurance for both classes.
Class 2 mobility scooters have a maximum speed of 4mph and are primarily designed for use on pavements and other pedestrian areas.
Class 3 mobility scooters can travel at up to 8mph on the road but must be limited to 4mph when used on pavements.
Some mobility products are capable of travelling at speeds above 8mph. First Senior may still provide insurance for these scooters, subject to the usual policy terms and acceptance criteria. However, the policy does not provide cover for any loss, damage, claim, liability, cost or expense arising while the scooter or electric wheelchair is travelling at more than 8mph.
Even when insurance is not compulsory, mobility scooters are regularly used around pedestrians, vehicles, shops and other people’s property. No matter how carefully you drive, accidents can still happen.
You could accidentally:
- collide with a parked vehicle;
- damage an item or fitting inside a shop;
- injure a pedestrian; or
- damage somebody else’s property.
Without suitable insurance, you could be personally responsible for the costs arising from an accident. Public liability protection can therefore be one of the most important parts of a mobility scooter insurance policy.
What does First Senior mobility scooter insurance cover?
First Senior’s specialist mobility scooter insurance can provide protection against a range of unexpected events, subject to the policy terms, limits and exclusions.
Accidental damage
A mobility scooter can be damaged if it is knocked over, involved in a collision or accidentally damaged while being used, transported, loaded or unloaded.
First Senior mobility insurance can help meet the cost of repairing or replacing your scooter following an insured accidental damage incident.
Theft and attempted theft
Mobility scooters can be valuable and may attract thieves, particularly when left outside shops, healthcare facilities or other public places.
First Senior can provide cover if your mobility scooter is stolen. The policy can also cover damage caused during an attempted theft, subject to its security conditions and other terms.
Fire, flood and storm damage
Unexpected weather and environmental events can cause extensive damage to mobility equipment.
First Senior’s mobility insurance can help protect your scooter against insured fire, flood and storm damage, giving you valuable reassurance both at home and while you are out and about.
Public liability cover of up to £3 million
Public liability insurance can protect you financially if you accidentally injure another person or damage their property while using your mobility scooter.
First Senior mobility scooter insurance includes public liability protection of up to £3 million, subject to the policy terms and conditions.
This could be particularly important if you regularly use your scooter on pavements, in shopping centres or in other busy public spaces.
Puncture cover
A puncture can leave your scooter unusable and can happen anytime, unexpectedly.
First Senior mobility scooter insurance includes puncture cover, subject to the terms of your policy.
If you currently rely on household insurance to protect your scooter, it is important to check exactly what is included. Read our guide, “Does Home Insurance Cover My Mobility Scooter?”, for a more detailed comparison between household and specialist mobility scooter insurance.
Is Roadside Recovery included with mobility scooter insurance?

First Senior’s Roadside Recovery is separate from mobility scooter insurance, but it can be arranged alongside it for additional protection.
Mobility scooter insurance covers insured events such as accidental damage, theft, fire and public liability claims. Roadside Recovery provides practical assistance if your scooter or powerchair becomes immobilised while you are away from home.
First Senior’s specialist Roadside Recovery service is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Assistance may be provided following:
- mechanical or electrical breakdown;
- a flat battery;
- a puncture;
- an accident;
- vandalism; or
- attempted theft.
The service can help get you and your mobility scooter back to your home or temporary UK address, subject to the service’s mileage limits, terms and exclusions.
You can learn more in our guide: “Do You Really Need Roadside Recovery for Your Mobility Scooter?”
What about mechanical or electrical faults?
Mobility scooter insurance does not cover a component that stops working because of a mechanical or electrical failure.
First Senior’s Extended Warranty is a separate product that may be arranged alongside your mobility scooter insurance. It is designed to provide protection against eligible mechanical and electrical failures.
An Extended Warranty can cover relevant parts, labour and call-out costs, subject to the policy limits and conditions. There is no excess, and First Senior pays the authorised repairer directly, so you do not have to pay the full repair bill upfront and then claim it back.
Each product performs a different role:
- Mobility scooter insurance protects against insured risks such as accidental damage, theft and public liability claims.
- Roadside Recovery helps if you and your scooter become stranded away from home.
- Extended Warranty protects against eligible mechanical and electrical failures.
Our team can explain the differences and help you understand the protection each one provides.
Can First Senior insure a second-hand mobility scooter?
Yes. First Senior mobility insurance is available for both new and used mobility scooters.
If you have purchased a second-hand scooter, you will need to provide accurate information about its make, model, age, serial number and value when arranging your cover.
Extended Warranty protection may also be available for used mobility scooters up to 8 years old. For second-hand equipment, the warranty cover becomes effective 45 days after the policy begins.
What should you look for in mobility scooter insurance?

Price is important, but it should not be the only consideration when comparing mobility scooter insurance.
Before choosing a policy, check:
- the value for which your scooter will be insured;
- whether accidental damage is included;
- whether theft and attempted theft are covered;
- the level of public liability protection;
- whether you will have to pay an excess;
- any security and storage requirements;
- whether protection applies away from home;
- how the claims process works; and
- whether Roadside Recovery and Extended Warranty are also available.
If your mobility scooter can travel faster than 8mph, you should also check how the policy treats incidents that occur while travelling above this speed.
You should consider the insurer’s knowledge and experience too. First Senior has worked exclusively within the mobility industry for more than 30 years, helping us understand both the equipment and the practical needs of the people who rely on it.
How does a First Senior insurance claim work?
Straightforward claims support
If you need to make a claim, First Senior’s experienced team will guide you through the process and, where an authorised repair is agreed, can pay the repairer directly so you do not have to pay the full cost upfront and claim it back.
Is mobility scooter insurance worth having?
Whether insurance is right for you is a personal decision, but it is worth considering what being uninsured could mean.
Ask yourself:
- Could I afford to repair or replace my scooter?
- How often do I use it away from home?
- Would I be able to meet the cost of a public liability claim?
- What would happen to my independence if my scooter were stolen or damaged?
For many mobility scooter owners, specialist insurance provides valuable reassurance that financial protection and experienced support are available when something unexpected happens.

Not exactly. Mobility insurance is the broader term, covering protection for mobility scooters, powerchairs, manual wheelchairs and other mobility equipment, while mobility scooter insurance refers specifically to cover for a mobility scooter. First Senior provides specialist mobility insurance across all of these equipment types — read more in our guide to powerchair and wheelchair insurance.
